Living in the Shade
LIVING IN THE “SHADE” OF OUR HEAVENLY FATHER
By: Pastor Gary Wingo
“I lift my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of Heaven and Earth. He will not let your foot slip – He who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, He who watches over you will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you – the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm – He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore!” Psalm 121
This amazing Scripture was so easy when we lived in Colorado. Every day, we could look out from our house, at every angle, and see majestic mountains. Now, being flatlanders who live in a beach community, what happened to my mountains?
When I look up now, I don’t see “mountains” or even hills. What I do see are resplendent, cobalt blue skies, impressive masterly-brushed cloud formations shouting out loud the ever-present, loving nature of our Lord God! I can go just a few feet down from my house and experience the remarkable emerald waters of the Gulf with the crashing sounds of “Beach Music.” That haunting music resounds throughout our area encouraging us to stand still, to listen, and seek the Source of our help and Hope – Jesus Christ, our risen Savior.
It is way to easy to allow fear and anxiety to creep in…to move around with downcast souls, wondering if we will catch COVID-19. But we don’t have to! As I search God’s Word, I find so many Scriptures like Psalm 121; Scriptures that encourage us, that cause us to turn our gaze upward, challenging us to Trust and “Lift our eyes to the Mountains”…to the skies…to the Lord God’s Hope sculpted out in Creation by the power of Christ’s Grace and Truth.
Psalm 121 promises that…
-Our help has arrived! Be relieved and at Peace!
-God Almighty is watching over us! Let your hearts not be troubled
-The Holy Spirit is our “Shade” at our right hand! Hope and Mercy abound!
-He will NEVER, EVER give up on us – watching over our lives both now and forevermore!
We are in this together, so together, let us encourage, trust, pray, and serve with Godly wisdom; and, as we love one another…
“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe [TRUST] in Me.” John 14:1
